The Burns Court District
Developed by Owen Burns in the 1920’s, Burns Court is a historic district made up of 15 bungalows, originally built as rentals to attract wealthy visitors to the Sarasota area. Today, Burns Court includes shops, restaurants, galleries. It’s also the home of the landmark theater, Burns Court Cinema and the popular Owen’s Fish Camp, a restaurant with an ode to old Florida living.
The Main Street District
The Main Street District encompasses all of Main Street as well as State Street and the areas surrounding it. This lively district is lined with restaurants, hair salons, home decor shops, clothing stores , the Hollywood 20 Theaters, and numerous other businesses. Main Street is also the home of the popular Sarasota Farmer’s Market. Each Saturday vendors line the street with fruits, vegetables, breads, art work, jewelry, hand-made soap, and more.
The Historic Downtown District
The Historic Downtown district encompasses First Street, Orange Avenue, State Street, Gulfstream Avenue and North Pineapple Avenue. In 2009, the area was added to the US National Register of Historic Places. There are six historic properties within this district that are listed on the U.S. National Historic Register including the American National Bank Building, The DeMarcay Hotel, The Roth Cigar Factory, The Kress Building, The Sarasota Opera House, and Worths Block.
The Palm Avenue District
The Palm Avenue district was known as one of the most prestigious addresses during the 1920’s. To this day, Palm Avenue is still one of the most well-known districts in downtown Sarasota. It’s street are lined with palm trees, restaurants, galleries, and beautiful historic architecture. Enjoy Palm Avenue’s First Friday Walks from 6:00 – 9:00 with shopping, dancing, music on the streets, and more.
The Rosemary District
The Rosemary District, located 5 blocks from the Sarasota Bay and founded in 1866, is urban meets historic. The Rosemary District is known as the Sarasota Arts District and is comprised of shops, galleries, cottages, bungalow’s and high-rise condos.
The Towles Court District
The Towles Court Distric, also recognized as the Art Colony of downtown Sarasota, is known for its galleries, studios, and third Friday Night Art Walks from 6-10 PM. Historic bungalows line the street in every color you can think of. If you like art and culture, Towles Court is for you.
