Palmer Ranch is a master planned community made up of 24 neighborhoods spread over 10,000 acres in Sarasota, Florida. The community is comprised of single family homes, condos, villas, assisted living facilities and some commercial real estate. The community is an attraction to first time home buyers, families with children, and retirees. It is one of the most popular areas to live due to its well-kept communities and convenient location. The award-winning Siesta Key Beach is approximately 15 minutes away, as well as a variety of shops and restaurants.

Palmer Ranch has a Master Property Association which maintains the attractive park-like settings around each neighborhood. The Master Association recently received approval for the construction of a 6,500 square foot community center to be located at the corner of Palmer Ranch Boulevard and Beneva Road.

At the entrance of Palmer Ranch, you will find two flags. These were first erected upon the events of 911 and have remained in place to this day.

Each community in Palmer Ranch is governed by its own association.  Buyers should inquire about the rules and regulations for the specific community of interest.

The History of Palmer Ranch

The land now referred to as Palmer Ranch was originally owned by Bertha Palmer, a down to earth widow, who visited the area in 1910 after her wealthy husband, Potter Palmer, passed. She used the inheritance to purchase 80,000 acres in Sarasota, FL. She was one of the first snow birds in the Sarasota area and one of the largest property owners to date. Her upper-class social status helped to put the small farming village of 840 residents on the map.

A confident woman, Bertha turned the newly purchased wilderness into orange groves and pastures for prize livestock. She was one of the first to use a dipping of insecticide method on her cattle to prevent ticks. After witnessing how successful the technique was, dipping became a law and was the procuring cause of eliminating the area’s tick problem.

Eight years after purchasing the Sarasota acreage, Bertha passed away from breast cancer, but her legacy can still be seen throughout the area today. The master planned community of Palmer Ranch was named in her honor. In addition, Honore Avenue, a well know street in Sarasota, is named after Bertha. Honore was her maiden name as well as the name of her son. In areas of Palmer Ranch you will still see cattle wandering the land, reminiscent of what it was like when Bertha walked the land. In the 1930’s her two sons, Honore and Potter, Jr. donated 2000 acres of the land, now known as Myakka River State Park.

Things to Do Near Palmer Ranch

Siesta Key Beach, which has won accolades for the best beach in the nation, is a convenient 10-15 minutes from the community of Palmer Ranch.  Other nearby local beaches include Venice Beach, Lido Key Beach, Nokomis Beach, and Manasota Beach.

If walking or hiking is your thing, then be sure to visit Historic Spanish Point, where you can walk the outdoor trails and discover Sarasota history back during when Native Americans resided on the land. You will discover architectural finds such as Indian mounds and learn about the tails of the early settlers who inhabited the land with the Indians.

Oscar State Scherer Park offers 15 miles of trails for hiking and biking. In addition, there is a lake for swimming, a stream for canoeing and kayaking, and areas for fishing on the 1,381-acre park. The park is known as one of the best places to view the Florida Scrub Jay, the only bird endemic to Florida.

Experience the arts and culture of the Sarasota area at the Sarasota Opera House, the Florida Studio Theater, the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, the Asolo Repertory Theater, or the Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota. There are plenty of museums to enjoy as well including the Ringling Museum of Art, The Sarasota Classic Car Museum, The Marietta Museum of Art and Whimsy, and the Crowley Museum and Nature Center.

There is no shortage of restaurants near Palmer Ranch, and good ones at that. In 2016, Sarasota was named one of the Best Food Cities in the U.S. by Conde Naste Traveler’s Choice Award. Many of our local restaurants overlook the beaches or capture city views at their best.
